The COVID-19 may seem like a Goliath but remember this masterpiece, the Biblical hero,

Michelangelo Buonarroti’s David.

The account of the battle between David and Goliath is told in the book of 1 Samuel where David slays Goliath.

The David stands 17 feet tall (over 5 meters) . It took Michelangelo nearly 3 years to chisel this out of a solid block of granite.

He was only 26 years old when he started creating the David in 1501.

Michelangelo’s perspective was different because the statue of David shows him before the battle.

However, Michelangelo’s contemporaries all portrayed David after his triumphant victory over the slaying of Goliath

With the COVID-19 virus we are still before this formidable battle.

We must stay focused and concentrate on what we have to do to defeat this Goliath.

Just as David is depicted before the battle; Michelangelo catches him at his apex of his concentration.

He’s relaxed but alert yet his victory was one of cleverness and not sheer force.

Michelangelo worked on the statue in the utmost of secrecy. This virus came in secrecy.

Notice that David’s slingshot is barely visible – emphasizing that the victory was one of cleverness.

Just like David, we need to be clever to defeat this virus.  Wash your hands, social distancing and follow the CDC guidelines -you all have heard this…

My heart goes out not only to the country of Italy but also the many other nations affected by this virus as well.

When I was younger, in 1995 I had the opportunity to photograph this great masterpiece in Florence, Italy. I shot this from a different perspective where few dared wander.

These pictures were actually taken on 35 mm Kodak film !

Details: Nikon FE with a Nikkor 105mm at f 3.5  1/60 using 100 ASA film

The point I’m making is that we all have battles to face. We definitely are involved in a great battle against the COVID-19 virus.

Just as David was involved in the battle with Goliath he overcame and was victorious.  We will overcome this virus together !

Lastly, I want to leave you with a beautiful piece of music composed by the Italian musician, Roby Facchinetti – here is the link https://youtu.be/D5DhJS5hGWc

As the song so succinctly says, “Torneremo a fidarci di Dio !We will return to trust God – again !

I hope this music blesses and encourages you all.  Be strong and Fear not !
